FAQs
Q. What Should I Expect At My First Appointment?
To make your first appointment you will need to either call or email us to arrange a time with the appropriate therapist. Please call 587-318-1600, email us at info@movementsportsclinic.ca or use our contact form.
Before you arrive for your first appointment you can complete an Intake Form on-line. Please Register On-Line to gain access to our forms. Once registered and after the first assessment, you can use our Online Booking service for future appointments.
All information collected is kept confidential and stored securely.
Your Alberta health Services number is not a requirement but is helpful for us to locate or order diagnostic imaging reports and for communication with your physician if needed.
We would like your e-mail address to send appointment reminders. Invoices can also be sent electronically to you at your request. Therapists may ask for your email address to send you exercise videos and home programs and to communicate regarding your progress.
Intake information can also be collected upon arrival to the clinic as well, so please give yourself a few minutes before your scheduled appointment time to complete our forms if not completed on-line.
Q. Can I Book On-Line?
Once registered and after your first appointment, you will be able to book future appointments on-line. On-line Booking will be subject to approval and you will receive an email confirmation once your request is processed.
Q. What Should I Bring?
For assessment and treatment purposes we need to be able to see your body move and be able to access your skin and muscles. Please bring or wear some clothing that is easy to move in like shorts and t-shirt for men and shorts or yoga-like pants and tank tops for women. Comfortable shoes or runners may also be required for certain exercises and for treadmill running if appropriate.
Q. What is Involved in a Physiotherapy Assessment?
As per the Practice Standards outlined by our regulatory body, all physiotherapists must conduct an assessment prior to commencing treatment.
If you are new to the practitioners at Movement, a detailed history will be taken. Questions will be related to your current problem but will also include prior history of injuries, illnesses, surgeries. We ask questions about your work, sports, family and hobbies in order to understand about your needs as an individual. Medication information is necessary as we need to understand potential for certain side effects impacting treatment (for example, taking blood thinners or ibuprofen will make bruising more likely with treatments such as Acupuncture and IMS.)
Goal setting is also important as we need to know what you want to be able to achieve so we can help you meet your objectives. Controlling pain is a common goal, but we also want to have some active goals to work towards like returning to run, lift your grandchildren or be fit for a backpacking trip.
Other than the subjective history taking, we also do a physical evaluation that will look at your movement patterns, evaluate your strength, palpate your muscles, and use special test that help us diagnose the problem.
Once we have gathered the information we need we will discuss the findings and options for treatment. Please look at our Services & Treatments section for more information. An approximate timeframe for recovery will be determined as well as optimal frequency of treatment sessions.
In most cases treatment intervention can start right after the assessment and is included in the assessment fee. You will likely be in the clinic for about 45-60 minutes for your first visit.
Expect to be provided with some home care activities like exercises, icing or heat and self massage/release techniques. Your own involvement in your treatment is critical for success in most cases.
Q. What Should I Expect From Physiotherapy Treatment Sessions?
Treatment sessions follow up on the plan determined at the assessment. Please look at Services & Treatment Techniques for more information about treatment that Movement Sports Clinic’s therapists provide. A re-evaluation will be done at every appointment to measure changes and determine further course of action. Generally you will be in the clinic for 30-45 minutes for most treatment sessions.
If you are having any needling treatments performed, please ensure that you have eaten beforehand and plan for good hydration. Some techniques can make you feel tired and a bit foggy and others can leave you feeling energized. It is generally recommended to exercise before treatment sessions, not after. Discuss timing of exercise and treatment sessions with your therapist.
Q. Do You Treat Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA) Patients?
We welcome MVA patients both privately and under the Alberta Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols. Please inform us at time of booking if you are attending treatment related to an MVA. Once registered (Register On-line), you can access forms to be filled out related to your accident. We recommend that you complete these forms prior to your assessment.
Q. Do You Take Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB) Claims?
We are not a WCB Authorized provider and cannot treat patients related to their WCB claims. Please inform us at time of booking whether you think your injury is work related. We are unable to recommend where else you can go for treatment, but a list is available here.
Q. Do You Provide Community Physiotherapy Services?
Alberta Health Services provides physiotherapy coverage for certain conditions like post-operative management and post-fracture care. Movement Sports Clinic does not have a contract with AHS, but a list of AHS service providers is available here.
Q. How Do I Make Payments?
Payment will be taken after the assessment is complete and an invoice will be provided for your records and insurance purposes. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Debit, cash and cheque.
